Overview

The Visual Communication and Design program prepares students for college and careers in graphic design, digital publishing, and visual media. Students learn how to create professional visual materials using industry-standard software and technology while developing both creative and technical skills. Through hands-on projects, students explore typography, color theory, digital imaging, layout development, branding, and visual storytelling. The program combines creativity with real-world production techniques, helping students build a professional portfolio that showcases their design abilities and workplace readiness.

What You’ll Learn

  • Graphic design and page layout using Adobe InDesign
  • Digital image editing and manipulation with Adobe Photoshop
  • Vector illustration and branding design using Adobe Illustrator
  • Design principles including color theory, typography, balance, contrast, and visual hierarchy
  • Digital publishing and print production processes
  • Concept development, brainstorming, and creative problem-solving
  • Professional workflow techniques for print and digital media
  • How to prepare files for commercial printing and online publishing
  • Collaboration, project management, and client communication skills
  • How to build and present a professional design portfolio

Hands-On Experience

Students gain real-world experience by working on authentic design projects similar to those used in the graphic design and digital media industries. Projects may include:

  • Logos and branding materials
  • Advertisements and promotional graphics
  • Magazines, brochures, and newsletters
  • Digital illustrations and vector artwork
  • Social media graphics and marketing campaigns
  • School and community-based client projects
  • Portfolio and presentation development

Students also participate in work-based learning experiences such as job shadowing, guest speakers, field trips, internships, and collaborative design projects. Throughout the program, students act as creative professionals while learning to meet deadlines, solve design challenges, and communicate visually for real audiences.

Early College Opportunities

Through a partnership with Wilmington University, students may earn up to 15 college credits and a college-level certificate while still in high school. These credits align with Wilmington University’s Digital Design pathway and may transfer to other colleges and universities nationwide. This opportunity allows students to begin college studies early while preparing for careers in graphic design, visual communication, and media production.

Certification

Students may have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications, including:

  • Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) Photoshop Certification
  • Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) Illustrator Certification

Earning Potential Range:

Careers in visual communication and design can offer earnings ranging from approximately $18 to $50 per hour, depending on education, certifications, experience, and job role.
