Welding/Fabrication Technologies

Overview

Welding is the process of joining pieces of metal together using very high heat. A powerful electric arc melts the edges of the metal, and sometimes a filler is added to make the connection even stronger. This creates a bond that can be as strong—or stronger—than the original metal.

Welders are needed all over the world. They work on big projects like building bridges, ships, and pipelines for oil and gas. They also work in power plants, factories, and other industrial places. Because the work can be tough and requires special skills, welders often earn good pay. Skilled welders are in high demand, and many have the chance to work in a variety of exciting and important jobs.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to weld in different settings like construction sites and factories
  • How to weld large pipes for oil and gas systems
  • How to work on ships and other big structures
  • How to weld steel frames and beams for buildings
  • How to write basic reports about your welding projects
  • How to prepare for trade apprenticeships and advanced job training

Hands-On Experience

Students in the Welding program practice real welding skills in a workshop. They learn how to use tools and equipment safely. Students work on projects that are similar to what welders do on the job, like welding pipes or building strong steel frames. They also learn how to read blueprints and follow safety rules. By the end of the program, students will be ready for a welding job or to join an apprenticeship to learn more.

Certification

Students in this program may earn:

  • Pre-Apprenticeship Program Certification
  • American Welding Society (AWS) Certification

Employment Opportunities

After graduation or during a senior-year co-op, students can work as:

  • Pipe welder
  • Pipe fitter
  • Structural steel welder
  • Steel fabricator
  • Iron worker
  • Maintenance welder
  • Construction welder

Earning Potential Range:

Students in this field can earn between $17 and $49 per hour, depending on the job and level of experience.
