Overview

The Legal Administrative Assisting program at Howard High School of Technology equips students with the core responsibilities and specialized skills required to efficiently support legal organizations. Students learn to perform and coordinate administrative activities, ensuring that information is effectively disseminated to both staff and clients. In addition to mastering general office automation involving computer software programs, facsimile machines, transcribers, photocopiers, and telephone systems, students receive training in preparing various forms of legal correspondence and official legal documents, such as summonses, complaints, motions, responses, and subpoenas. The curriculum also includes training on conducting legal research using automated systems commonly used within law offices or the judicial system. The skills acquired in this program provide a strong foundation and career flexibility, allowing students to transition into other specialized legal administrative assistant positions if desired.

Learning Experience

Students in the Legal Administrative Assisting program gain hands-on experience with the essential tools and techniques used in legal offices. The program also emphasizes the importance of effective communication and organization within a legal setting, preparing students for a variety of roles in the legal and administrative fields.

Employment opportunities available with senior year co-op and after graduation:

Doctors’ offices, outpatient facilities, medical-aid facilities, hospitals, and specialist offices EMR, EMT, firefighter, 911 operator, police dispatcher, police officer
 

Employment opportunities requiring 2-years or more of specialized training after graduation:

Paramedic, nurse, surgical technician, ER doctor, ER, nurse, physician’s assistant
 

Earning Potential Range:

$19/hr to $22/hr, depending on role and experience.
