World Language Learning Programs

Enhancing knowledge of another culture and language while strengthening English grammar.

To graduate, students must complete and pass two years of the same world language. This requirement began with the Class of 2015.

Students who speak Spanish at home or have strong reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills may take a test to earn credit without taking the classes. This is called the AAPPL (Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Language). It is an online test offered through the guidance office and includes real-life speaking and listening tasks using videos and audio.

This test follows Delaware’s graduation rules for world language credit (Title 14, Regulation 505, 3.2.1.2). Students can earn:

  • 1 Spanish credit if they score at Novice Mid (N3) or Intermediate (I) in 3 or 4 of the 4 tested skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening).
  • 2 Spanish credits if they score at Novice High (N4) or Intermediate (I) in 3 or 4 of the 4 skill areas.

Students interested in this option should talk to their guidance counselor.
