STEP Program and 18-22 Transition to Adult Life Program

The STEP Program at Delcastle Technical High School is designed for students eligible to participate in the Delaware Alternate Assessment, often working toward a Diploma of Alternate Achievement Standards. This program focuses on preparing students for life after graduation by promoting:

  • Life Skills
  • Independence
  • Vocational Training
  • Community Integration

Key Features of the STEP Program:

  • Academic Instruction: Tailored to individual student needs, covering English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Emphasis on communication skills, self-determination, social skills, and self-advocacy.
  • Vocational Training: Daily hands-on training in the Production and Imaging Technology career area, providing real-life work experience. Students also rotate through other career areas and peer partnerships.
  • Training Pathways:
    • Framing
    • Textiles/Embroidery
    • Office/Copying
    • Greenhouse
    • Customization/Engraving
    • Retail (School Store, vending, etc.)
  • Community-Based Instruction (CBI): Opportunities for students to generalize their learning in real-world settings within the local community.
  • Unified Club & Sports: Access to all Delcastle clubs, activities, and sports, including Unified Sports and the Unified Club, promoting inclusion and partnership with peers.

18-22 Transition to Adult Life Program

After completing high school, STEP Program graduates are eligible for the district’s 18-22 Program, hosted by Opportunity Center, Inc. (OCI). This program, known as FrameWORK for Success, provides:

  • Vocational Training: Unique skills training valuable to employers.
  • Community-Based Employment: Opportunities for both paid and unpaid internships, allowing students to explore career options.
  • Job Readiness Training: Resume building, job-seeking skills, and managing employer expectations.
  • Post-Secondary Planning: Guidance on whether to pursue employment immediately after high school or continue with further education.

Vocational Training Details for STEP Students

STEP students train daily in the Production and Imaging Technology area, simulating a real-life work environment. This includes:

  • Industry-Standard Skills: Use of software and machinery to create custom products (e.g., embroidered clothing, engraved items, framed prints).
  • Live Work: Students fulfill actual orders for the district and community, learning the importance of deadlines, quality control, and teamwork.

Community-Based Instruction (CBI)

Students receive academic and vocational instruction through CBI lessons, applying classroom knowledge in real-world community settings. This helps connect learning to practical, everyday applications.
