Surgical Technology

Overview

The Surgical Technology program is a two-year course that begins in 11th grade. Before joining, students must first take Medical Technology and Anatomy & Physiology in 10th grade. This program teaches students how to work in an operating room. They learn the basics of surgery, how to work safely, and how to help a surgical team. Students get hands-on practice in a lab made to look like a real operating room. They also learn advanced medical terms and how the human body works during surgery. This training prepares students for a career as a Surgical Technologist.

What You’ll Learn

  • The role of a Surgical Technologist and how surgery works
  • How to keep the surgical area clean and safe (asepsis and sterile technique)
  • Teamwork, safety, and professionalism in the operating room
  • How to use surgical tools and assist during operations
  • Medical terms used in surgery
  • How the body works and how it relates to surgical care

Hands-On Experience

Students learn by both studying in the classroom and practicing in the lab. The lab has real tools and equipment used in surgeries. Students work together as a team, just like in a real hospital. In their second year, some students may take college-level courses while still in high school through dual enrollment.

Certification

Students in the program may earn:

  • CPR and First Aid
  • OSHA Safety Training
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (IAHCSMM)
  • Certified Technician in Surgery-Certified (TS-C), by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Employment Opportunities

Jobs available during senior year or right after graduation:

  • Support roles in hospitals, outpatient centers, and other healthcare facilities

Earning Potential Range

Students in this field can earn between $37,500 and $71,000 per year, depending on the job and experience.
