Emergency Medical Services
Overview
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program at Howard High School of Technology teaches students how to help people in medical emergencies. Students learn how to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) by starting the first part of the national EMT course. This program also prepares students for jobs in fire departments, hospitals, and ambulance services. Students can earn certifications that let them start working right after high school. Full EMT certification is available when students turn 18.

- How the body works and how to check someone’s condition

- How to do CPR and use a defibrillator (AED)
- How to answer emergency calls
Hands-On Experience
Students practice emergency care using real tools and equipment. They learn CPR, how to move patients, and how to work safely. Some students also work in hospitals or with ambulance crews through co-op jobs in their senior year.

Earning Potential Range
Students in this field can earn between $16 and $22.50 per hour. With additional training or college, earnings can grow to $55,000–$120,000 per year.
