Biomedical Science & Allied Health
Overview
The Biomedical Science and Allied Health career program is designed to prepare students for a wide range of healthcare careers. The Biomedical Sciences (BS) program offers a sequence of courses aligned with national learning standards, employing a hands-on, real-world problem-solving approach. Students explore the concepts of human medicine and delve into topics such as physiology, genetics, microbiology, and public health. Through various activities, students examine the processes, structures, and interactions of the human body, often taking on the role of biomedical professionals. They also investigate the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, collaborating to design innovative solutions to modern health challenges, like fighting cancer with nanotechnology. The program emphasizes the development of teamwork, communication, organizational, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills. The BS courses complement traditional science courses and provide a foundation for STEM-centered or specialized academies. A strong focus on cardiology prepares students to qualify for certification as an Electrocardiograph Technician (EKG).
Program Highlights
- Curriculum:
- Concepts of cardiac medicine, anatomy & physiology, and medical terminology
- Introduction to basic patient care, EKG technology, and cardiac diseases
- Basic EKG processes, adaptations, and troubleshooting cardiac conduction systems and EKG tracing
- Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common cardiac diseases
- Overview of rhythm interpretation
- Preparation for post-secondary education and careers in healthcare
