The New Castle County Vocational Technical School District sponsors a Summer Career Camp for 6th and 7th grade students who are interested in exploring careers through fun, hands-on learning activities.

The 4-day sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

All camp programs are led by qualified vo-tech instructors.

All camp programs are open to both females and males.

Bus transportation is provided for all campers.

Camp cost is $100 per camper.  Camp cost is $40 for those students verified as participants in the free & reduced lunch program.

 

Camps are for students living in New Castle County.  Daily school bus transportation is included in the camp fee.  Customized routes throughout New Castle County neighborhoods are designed to pick-up and drop-off campers as close to their homes as possible.  Bus pick-ups begin approximately one hour before camp opens, and returns are approximately within one hour of camp closing.  Routes are designed after all campers have registered.

 

How to Obtain an Application

Vo-Tech Summer Camp Applications will be available after February 15th, and are mailed to all 6th and 7th grade public school students who live in New Castle County.  Applications are also available at all non-public middle schools in New Castle County, or by calling the NCC Vo-Tech School District at 302-995-8035.  Applications are processed on a first-come, first served basis, and programs fill quickly.  Application deadline for the 2008 camp is March 17.

 

On the application, campers are asked to choose career program areas in order of preference.  Every attempt is made to give applicants their first choice. 

 

Camp Choices for Students NOW in 6th Grade

 

6-a           Architectural Design – Campers will use the design process to plan their dream houses. Campers will use computers, drafting boards, T-squares, triangles and templates to draw floor plans, and then build a scale model of their house.

 

6-b          Building America! –Campers will create products using skills they learn in Carpentry, Electrical, HVAC, and Industrial Mechanics. Campers will rotate through a new trade area each day using a variety of tools to create items such as toolboxes, wiring systems, piping systems and framing for a house.

 

 6-c          Eco Camp – Campers will explore Hodgson through the eyes of an environmental scientist, surveying the organisms living in our campus woodland and wetland areas and conducting soil and water quality tests.  Campers will also draw a wildlife friendly residential landscape design, build a nest box, and plant different vegetation to take home. (Dress for outdoor activities.)

               

6-d          Electronics & Pre-Engineering  - Campers will learn basic computer modeling concepts and will use the Inventor program to first create a three dimensional model of a bridge, and then actually build their design by using materials provided.  Campers will also create an electronic light and soundboard.

 

6-e         ER – Campers will explore medical careers through fun activities learning first aid, CPR, how to take vital signs, and patient care using professional medical equipment.

 

6-f           Extreme Makeover – Campers can experience their own “extreme makeovers” as they try their skills at hairstyling, manicuring, facials, and make-up application.

 

6-g          PC and Me! –Campers will use digital images to create personalized postcards, greeting cards, photo albums, and collages.  They will also learn software to create catalogs and business cards.

 

6-h          Pit Stop – Cars, cars, and more cars!  Learn about auto care from the inside out - workings of an engine to repairing exterior paint.  Did we mention fast tire changes by the pit crew?

 

6-i            Super Nanny – Early Childhood Education is not babysitting.  Campers will explore activities that help pre-schoolers develop.  Campers interested in teaching, camp counseling, and even child health careers will love this one.

 

6-j            Top Chefs – Top Chef, Rachel Ray?  Don’t watch it on TV, do it yourself!  Campers will discover the joys of great cooking, baking, grilling, and more.

 

 

Camp Choices for Students NOW in 7th Grade

 

7-a           Batteries Included! – Campers will use the design process to create a fully functional circuit board complete with wires and soldering. Oh yes, and batteries are included.

 

7-b          Building America! – Campers will create products using skills they learn in carpentry and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.  Campers will work with light gauge metal and wood, constructing their own metal boxes and wooden CD holders.

 

7-c           CSI: Howard – Campers will explore a variety of careers from crime scene investigation to Police Academy training.  Activities include fingerprinting, sketch-artist software, DNA research, and live demonstrations from police and rescue squads.

               

7-d          Extreme Dental Makeover – Campers will learn how the experts create the perfect smile by making models, impressions, and splints.  They will also learn about dental x-rays, dental impressions, and chair-side dental assisting skills. Finally, they will create a replica of their own teeth.

 

7-e           Extreme Makeover – Campers can experience their own “extreme makeovers” as they try their skills at hairstyling, manicuring, facials, and make-up application.

 

7-f           New Castle County Choppers – Campers will explore the inner workings of small gasoline engines by disassembling and reassembling motorcycle engines.

 

7-g          PC and Me!  – Campers will create multimedia slideshows that will be burned on DVDs.  Slideshows will incorporate personalized photos to music.  They will also use software to create catalogs and their own business cards.

 

7-h          Structural Steel Detailing  – Campers will construct and complete structural steel building images using state-of-the-art modeling software.  Campers will take home blueprints of their buildings.

 

7-i            Top Chefs – Top Chef, Rachel Ray?  Don’t watch it on TV, do it yourself!  Campers will discover the joys of great cooking, baking, grilling, and more.

 

7-j            Undercover Computers – Campers will learn about the insides of a computer - what makes computers work, computer parts and construction, setting up network systems, and using software applications.
