Frequently Asked Questions

Below are questions, frequently asked by students and their families:

Q. Is there tuition?
A. Howard, Delcastle, Hodgson, and St. Georges are public high schools with no tuition.

Q. What about transportation?

Q. Are there sports programs and extra-curricular activities?
A. Howard, Delcastle, Hodgson, and St. Georges offer a variety of sports for full-time students. To complement the academic and career program, a wide range of student activities are offered at different schools, including student government, honor society, drama, newspaper, and yearbook. Each career program also offers students the opportunity to become involved in the local chapter of a national student vocational organization. Local, state, and national skill competitive events provide students incentive and recognition for their participation and achievement.

Q. How many different career areas are there to choose from?
A. Students have a choice of 42 different career areas such as computer network administration, construction trades, auto and aviation technology, health careers, and communications technology.

Q. How do I apply?
A. Applications can be obtained from your guidance department, any of the four vocational-technical high schools, or by calling the VoTech Admissions Office at (302) 995-8035.

Q. What is a completed application?
A. Applications are considered complete when the application form, essay, final report card from last year, and most recent report card are submitted.

Q. How are students selected?
A. Criteria for student selection include attendance, grades, the application essay, and comments from school personnel. The capacity of various career programs and classroom size determine the number of students accepted for enrollment. District staff attempts to place each student in the school and career program of first preference. However, if the number of applicants exceeds the available space, students may be provided with their second or third preference. Students not initially enrolled may be given the opportunity to attend as openings occur.

Q. Where do I submit my application?
A. Completed applications should be submitted to your school counselor.

Q. When does the VoTech admissions office receive my application?
A. Applications submitted to the school counselor by December 15 are usually received by January 10.

Q. When will I be notified?
A. Eighth-grade applicants who apply by January 10 are notified of their admission assignment by March 15. Ninth-grade applicants who apply by April 20 are notified by June 1st.

Q. How do state promotion requirements affect admission?
A. Admission assignment for all eighth-grade students is provisional until receipt of the student's final eighth-grade report card. Students must meet their present school district's requirements for promotion (excluding any district DSTP component) in order to attend a New Castle County VoTech high school. Any eighth-grade student who is offered admission but scores at Level I on the Delaware State Testing Program (DSTP) taken in March must, according to state law, attend a DSTP summer program and retake the state tests in order to remain eligible to attend the VoTech high school. DSTP summer school is offered through the student's present school district. Eighth-grade students who are offered admission but fail to meet their school district and state requirements for promotion are not eligible to attend a VoTech high school.
