Residential & Industrial Piping Systems is designed to teach the basic principles involved in the Plumbing and Pipefitting/Boiler Operator trades. A common curriculum, which would encompass skills used in both of these trades, will be used in the 10th grade for students who enroll in this revised program, with the students rotating at mid-year. In the 11th grade, students would select either Residential Plumbing or Industrial Systems, and begin to specialize in these skills. In 12th grade, students would continue training in their selected field, and also be eligible to participate in co-op employment in residential plumbing, pipefitting or sprinkler fitting, and power plant operations. The Power Plant will be available for training those students who select this strand, as would be the Power Plant simulator purchased in the last Career Review in 2003.
Advanced placement in the Plumbing Apprenticeship Program is available for qualified graduates in their chosen area through NCCER Level I.
Employment opportunities are available with private contractors, industrial maintenance departments, and state and local governments. The work is strenuous and is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, but wages are excellent and the employment outlook is very good.
