Health Information Technology prepares individuals as Medical Insurance Coding Specialists. They will learn to recognize procedures performed on patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings; learn to apply appropriate medical codes to medical procedures, supplies, and diagnoses; and learn to utilize correct billing procedures, thus insuring that proper payment is made to the clinician by both insurance companies and patients. The program includes instruction in Medical Office Accounting Procedures, ICD-9-CM /CPT/ HCPCS Coding, anatomy, medical terminology, Patient Privacy Regulations, Medical Records and Documentation, General Medical Office Procedures and medical transcription. Students will also learn to manage electronic health records. In addition, students will learn to perform basic patient-centered office/clinic procedures such as vital signs, height and weight, blood glucose testing, and urine and stool testing. Professional ethics and communication skills will also be emphasized. Certification will be sought through the National Health Career Association.
Employment opportunities following high school graduation:
Coders/ billers/ transcriptionists in doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals, independent medical billing companies, and even at home as independent contractors. Coders may work their way into office management positions with experience.
