FAQs

Below are questions frequently asked by students and their families:

1. Is there tuition?

Howard, Delcastle, Hodgson, and St. Georges are public high schools with no tuition

2. What about transportation?

VoTech high schools provide free, countywide transportation, including athletic/activity bus service to all students. For more information on transportation services, select the Transportation link on this website.

3. Are there sports programs and extracurricular activities?

Howard, Delcastle, Hodgson, and St. Georges offer a variety of sports for full-time students. To complement the academic and career program, a wide range of student activities are offered at different schools, including student government, honor society, drama, newspaper, and yearbook. Each career program also offers students the opportunity to become involved in the local chapter of a national student vocational organization. Local, state, and national skill competitive events provide students incentives and recognition for their participation and achievement.

4. How many different career areas are there to choose from?

Students have a choice of 38 different career areas in six categories: Business, Communications, & Computers, Construction Technologies, Health Services, Public & Consumer Services, Science, Energy, & Drafting Technologies, and Transportation.

5. Who is eligible?

Any 8th grade student who lives within the boundaries of the Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, Colonial, or Red Clay school districts in New Castle County is eligible to apply for admission.

6. How do I apply?

Students can apply at schoolchoicede.org during the State of Delaware's open application period: November 6, 2023 to January 10, 2024.

7. What is a completed application?

Applications are considered complete when all online forms, the final report card from last school year, and the most recent report card are submitted. Report cards must include attendance information.

8. How are students selected?

Primary criteria for student selection include attendance and grades. The capacity of various career programs and classroom size determine the number of students accepted for enrollment. Every attempt is made to place applicants in the school and career program of first preference. However, if the number of applicants exceeds the available space, students may be offered their second or third preference. Students who are not initially assigned may be reconsidered as openings occur.

9. When do I submit my application?

Completed applications from Grade 8 applicants should be submitted by the second Wednesday in January. If there are projected openings, applications from Grade 9 applicants should be submitted in May.

10. When will I be notified?

Grade 8 applicants who apply by the second Wednesday in January are notified of their admission assignment by March 1st. Grade 9 applicants who apply by June 1 are notified by August 1.

11. How do state promotion requirements affect admission?

Admission assignment for all eighth-grade students is provisional until receipt of the student’s final eighth-grade report card. Students must meet their present school district’s requirements for promotion (which includes earning a passing final grade in English and at least one other core academic class — Math, Science, or Social Studies) in order to attend a NCC Vo Tech high school. Students who are offered admission but fail to meet their school district/charter and state requirements for promotion are not eligible to attend a vo-tech high school.

12. Can graduates of Vo Tech high schools attend college?

More than 80% of our graduates report that they continue their education at technical and trade schools, colleges, and universities, or enter apprenticeships.
