NCC Vo-Tech Schools Focus on Instruction

Principals and assistant principals at all four NCC Vo-Tech High Schools have accepted the challenge to significantly increase the time they spend on instructional leadership. Research conducted on thousands of schools across the country during the past decade shows that student achievement increases when building administrators increase the time they spend helping teachers improve instructional practice. Time study analyses reveal that most school administrators spend between 20-30% of their day on instruction and the rest on operational and management duties. When administrators spend more time in classrooms providing direct support, guidance, and feedback necessary to ensure quality teaching, student achievement scores improve. The school district is committed to supporting principals in this goal by restructuring systems and providing alternative resources to better manage administrative obligations. This winter, the District established a formal affiliation with the School Administration Manager Project, a national initiative funded by the Wallace Foundation.

Delcastle Teacher Named National Health Education Professional

Co-operative education is the capstone experience for seniors who have learned skills in their career program of study and put those skills to work in businesses across New Castle County during the school day. During this economic recession, it is becoming more of a challenge to retain existing and identify new co-op placement opportunities for our vo-tech students. Any suggestions or leads would be most welcome.

VOTE FOR HOWARD! VOTE FOR HOWARD!

The U.S. Mint's latest state quarter program, sponsored by Delaware Congressman Mike Castle, will create coins that are emblematic of a national park, historic landmark or national refuge in each State and the District of Columbia. The Governor's office has set up a website where citizens may vote for their choice of emblems for Delaware’s new quarter. Howard High School of Technology has national historic landmark status, and is one of the nine choices. The school will celebrate its 140th anniversary of continuous educational service in September 2009.
